What is this obsession with lightening the skin?

I noticed that quite a few people are asking for ways to lighten their natural skin color. Isn't this a bit disturbing?

On the other hand, fair people are constantly trying to tan. Is there this PERFECT skin tone that we're after or are we just never happy with what we have?

What is this obsession with lightening the skin?
Some people are not happy with their life, and think that if only this ONE thing was different, everything would be fine.

Once they change it, they find out their life still is not perfect, and either change it again or change something else.

They need to love themselves, then worry about what to change. After they love themselves, they may be surprised how little really should be different.
Reply:I'm naturally pale, and it sucks. I burn in the winter. I can't tan in a tanning bed, and I tried sun-less tanning and I just looked rediculas. I can however run around naked in the snow and no one can see me.
Reply:thank you! people these days just have to be like everone else . God made u the way u are, so y try to change it? some people these days are so insecure!!!!!!!!!!!!
Reply:It is disturbing and it stems from white culture being a standard of beautry that many people want to attain. Many black people have tried and products have been createda as far back as the 1890's to lighten the skin. It's unfortuante because the thought was the lighter or near white you were the more chaces you had of not being looked down upon.
Reply:I am naturally tan year round but during the summer i get darker.
Reply:Dark people lightening their skin is ridiculous and sad. A pale person just doesn't want to spend their life looking like a ghost- which is why we want to darken. If you're already dark- be grateful. :)

But I guess a mid-tone is what we'd all like to have?
Reply:blame Michale Jackson..............
